concept
Cycled Design is grounded in reuse and circular design.
In Aotearoa, nearly half of all landfill waste comes from construction and demolition. At Cycled Design, we see this as an opportunity to rethink how materials are valued, used, and re-used — moving away from linear consumption toward more responsible, enduring practices.
Based in Raglan, our small studio offers laser cutting, CAD design, and print–copy services with low-waste, circular production at the centre of our work. We recover, upcycle, and repurpose reclaimed and surplus materials — sourced from clean-fill sites, transfer stations, and local waste streams — transforming them into modular, functional products with lasting relevance. Each outcome responds directly to overproduction by working with what already exists.
Founded by Gavin, an architectural graduate with over a decade of design experience, Cycled Design brings together technical skill, creativity, and environmental responsibility. Our approach is informed by the principles of closed-loop design described in The Upcycle by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, where materials retain value over time and are designed to be reused indefinitely or safely returned to the earth.
As Aotearoa moves toward a carbon-zero future, we see every project as an opportunity for progress — not through perfection, but through care and responsibility. Each piece contributes to an ongoing conversation about material intelligence, low-impact production, and design that is both intentional and enduring.
Cycled Design is more than a studio. It represents a shift in thinking — one that redefines waste as a resource and supports local making through thoughtful reuse.

Powered by waste reduction
Cycled Design is powered by waste reduction. Based in Raglan, our work reimagines how materials are valued, used, and re-used—placing circular design at the centre of our practice.
We recover, upcycle, and repurpose discarded materials, transforming them into modular, functional products with lasting relevance. From reclaimed plywood to excess paper stock, our materials are carefully sourced from clean-fill sites, transfer stations, and local waste streams. Each piece is a response to overproduction and linear consumption models that treat resources as disposable.
Our approach is deeply influenced by the ideas in The Upcycle by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, which promote the design of closed-loop systems that mimic nature—where waste is eliminated, and materials are reused without loss of quality. These principles shape how we work: designing products that can either safely return to the earth or be reused indefinitely with integrity and purpose.
As Aotearoa moves toward its carbon-zero future, we view each design as an opportunity to make progress—not through perfection, but through responsibility. Every item we make contributes to a conversation about low-impact production, material intelligence, and how design can be both intentional and enduring.
Cycled Design is not just a studio—it’s a shift in thinking. When you work with us, you’re not only supporting local craftsmanship, but helping redefine what waste can become.
